In the 1950′s, She was one half of the chart-topping group, Mickey & Sylvia. Then in her solo career as Sylvia, she shared mood altering performances like the one pictured above. As the 1970′s drew to a close, she became known as a pioneering music industry executive and independent record label owner. She’s referred to as the mother of hip hop. This is because Ms. Sylvia Robinson gave birth to mainstream hip hop. Ms. Robinson, along with her husband Joe Robinson and their son, was responsible for pushing rap music and hip hop culture into the mainstream through their record label, Sugar Hill Records. She revealed rap music to the masses when “Rapper’s Delight” was performed by her artists, The Sugarhill Gang, reached #4 on the R&B music charts. Later she signed Grandmaster Flash whose 1982 street reality themed single, “The Message”, was coincidentally the first hip hop song that I ever learned as a tot. Sylvia, we’re sending prayers to your family and wishing you well on your homegoing. Thank you for your huge contributions to the music world as the mother of hip hop.
