Some art gets me high. But the feeling is temporary and on the surface. Some art gets me high but the impression has permanence and goes deeper. And it impacts me on multiple levels of consciousness and awareness. I am affected and my perception becomes altered. The way I experience the world changes.

Learning how to write, we all had to practice and read. Since I’m on a journey making some sounds, I have to practice and listen.

Public Enemy and Bomb Squad producer, Hank Shocklee created the soundscape of one of my all time favorite tracks. “Self destruction-we’re headed for self destruction…” blasted Public Enemy out of my headphones while riding the bus from Lynn to Haymarket and back to stay with my dad’s family in Boston on the weekends. I had the Public Enemy single, “Self Destruction” cranked to 10. It fed me words that inspired and spoke the truth. The energy was thick. The music drowned out all the background noise.

Like some of you, I grew up watching MTV. When I watched it, they only had two reality tv shows. Brown Paper Bag was one of the videos that might play in a day. I saw the song performed live with live drums and upright bass. Roni Size and Reprezent at the old Axis on Lansdowne Street in Boston was my first live DnB concert experience. Check out the lyrics to the song.

Fast Forward to 2011;

“This right here, I swear will end too soon…” warned the melodic vocal of the UK’s Katy B on the Benga’s hit remix “Katy on a Mission” as it blared out the speakers in old Las Vegas, blocks from the Fremont Street Experience. I was at the 2 year anniversary of a Las Vegas Dubstep collective. It reminded me of the time i spent living in the Nevada. People from Sin City are really nice people. They go out of their way to help you feel welcome. And depending on your chances you can win big money playing Poker and Keno, or lose everything and end up walking from where you came or to the airport.

My first dubstep concert experience was a sub.mission event at Cervantes in Denver featuring Mala of Digital Mystikz and DJ Joe Nice. There were low and wobbly sub-bass frequencies giving hugs to frenetic ragga style hi hat riddims. Call it my baptism in Dubstep. The condition the music created was cozy but inspired me and all the others in the building to jump up and sweat until the morning. I gave him a CD of my first productions from Ableton Live. My tracks weren’t Dubstep but were other styles including hip hop, ambient, and some experimental tracks with B-More house.

This past August, I attended another huge Dubstep show. The headliners were Mrk1 of Virus Syndicate and Truth NZ. The music moved me from the moment I got to the venue until the melodies left my head. But then I went online and listened some more. Finding old releases that were now favorites, and new to me.

A few months later, I saw Mrk1 live again but this time with Virus Syndicate when they performed live in Denver with Ill Esha, credited as the first female to spin, sing, and mc at the same time.

On when she decided to become a music producer, she says “when I graduated from high school at 17, while visiting Europe, I was introduced to wider varieties of Electronic music and I decided that I wanted to be a music producer. My friend had a recording studio in his house and showed me some of the basics of how to record at home. We recorded my first demo. When I returned to the U.S. I started recording with my Aunt at her home studio.” This helped her to reveal her greatest obstacle.

“The biggest obstacle I’ve faced while pursuing my dream was feeling unable to communicate my thoughts musically. When I was in a room with musicians and they were asking me questions about styles and tempos. It felt confusing and intimidating.” After working to overcome this hurdle by taking more theory classes, she started to get an idea of what she wanted to communicate. When asked about other personal issues she states, “I had a major surgery in 2006. That made it impossible to sing while I was in recovery. Even though it was a rough time mentally and physically, I was spiritually motivated to keep pushing and keep creating.”
