ASIA LAKAY GRADY BIO

Asia Lakay Grady comes from a family of award winning musicians, cultural historians and creative entrepreneurs. Her Live PA act includes original songs and improvised vocals.

She was born and raised in Dorchester, Mission Hill, and Lynn, Massachusetts. Her company, ALG Media, LLC currently resides in Denver, Colorado. Growing up in the 80′s and 90′s, she developed a love for electronic music, poetry and spoken word which resulted in her first press mention in the arts section of the Boston Globe at the age of 19.  Before this she was singing in church, on the school yard, and in musicals in her hometowns.

Asia Lakay Grady was nominated for a scholarship by her high school music teacher. After winning a System-5 scholarship to Berklee College of Music, she began collaborating on stage and in the studio with a range of musicians, both locally, and internationally. By the time she completed high school and was mid-way through college, she set a goal of learning how to publish audio independently.

In between working several jobs including waitressing, temp office work, tutoring, retail, security, live performances and modeling, she attended classes at Bunker Hill Community College and The New England Institute of Art. In college, she became a go-to person for live performances, recording vocals, artist booking and studio assistance.

In 2004, she left Boston and established residency in Henderson, NV. It was there that she began to create the first drafts of the music that colleagues said, “seemed to come out of her head”. She drew inspiration from sounds by classic and contemporary reggae, hip hop, electro, breakbeat and r&b groups.

Some of the artists that she credits as major inspirations include Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Prince, Lisa Stansfield, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Afrika Bambaataa, Chaka Khan, Queen Latifah, Aaliyah, Missy Elliot and Timberland, Shirley Bassey and the Propellerheads, Lauryn Hill and the Fugees, The Neptunes and N.E.R.D., The Gorillaz, Hot Chip, Nine Inch Nails, Sade, Felix the Housecat, Erykah Badu, Lee Scratch Perry, Outkast, RZA and the Wu Tang Clan.

Today, she divides her time between creating audio, performing live, attending local shows, building her digital photography portfolio, doing web design for local businesses, and engaging in social media making new friends and fans, while  mastering the business side of music.

Since living in Colorado, she has expanded her live performance repertoire to include up to 2 hours of original songs and jazz standards ranging from Round Midnight, Night in Tunisia and God Bless the Child. Because of her certainty in the unity of all living beings, her creative passion, and her open-mind for collaboration with a broad range of hip hop, electronic, reggae and rock artists locally and internationally via the web, asia lakay grady is poised to continue providing music that “paints a picture”, lyrics to “burn a hole in your soul”, and uplifting or mellow vocals to fill you with some “new light”.
