Radiohead – Haiti Relief Concert Auction 1/24/10

Thank’s @artistrickards and for sharing this clip via twitter.

In the recent days after experiencing a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, the people of Haiti, are in recovery. Rebuilding structures and spirits is going to be a process that will take longer than overnight to complete. To help with sustainable development in the affected region, you can continue to donate resources through online & text campaigns; 1) Texting “HAITI” to 90999 will send a $10 donation to to the Red Cross, the world’s largest humanitarian network’s Haiti Relief Effort and Texting “YELE” to 501501 will send $5 to Wyclef Jean’s Yele, an organization working since 2005 to provide grassroots support to transform the country,  2) Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971, 3) Engineers Without Borders USA, helps design and implement sustainable engineering projects, in addition to donating, if you are a french/creole speaking engineer, they want you for projects in progress in Haiti, 4) Join the facebook group ATLANTA FOR HAITI, for info on how you can help the Haitian Alliance in Greater Atlanta Metro area collect, ship, and distribute medical and emergency supplies and volunteers to Haiti, 5) Pay your phonebill early to send your text donations as soon as possible. (Thanks to @TaiSaintBoogie for the reminder!), 6) No additional Blood products have been requested by Haiti as of today, but you can still Give Blood and/or Host a Blood Drive in your local community.

From big to small there’s something you can do to help. You count. Help.

Oppression, Slavery, Sex-Trafficking and HIV/AIDS – Linked?

Yesterday, December 1st was World AIDS Day. “The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is annually observed on December 2 to remind people that modern slavery works against human rights.” This goal of this blog post is to prove that their is a link between slavery and new HIV/AIDS infections. Ultimately, knowledge is power, so visit the additional resources at the end of this article to learn more about how you can take action and help make a difference.

“The slave trade is probably the human tragedy that affected the greatest number of people for the longest period of time in History. However, it is only an episode of slavery, which is a larger phenomenon that dates back to the earliest Antiquity.

Today, it persists under new forms of massive violations of the human rights proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations in 1948 (child labour, forced labour, prostitution…etc).”

Modern Forms of Slavery

According to a 2007 study published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in conjunction with Boston’s Harvard School of Public Health and other US research centers;

“US researchers suggest that the trafficking of young girls and women as sex slaves is helping to spread HIV in South East Asia. A study on the prevalence of HIV infection in Nepalese girls and women who were trafficked to India as sex slaves and then repatriated shows that 38 per cent of them were HIV positive.”

For young women who were sex-trafficked before their 15th birthday, “the HIV infection rate was above 60 per cent. One in seven of the women and girls had been forced into prostitution when they were younger than 15.”

“HIV infection has been seen as perhaps the most critical health consequence of sex trafficking, but sex-trafficked girls and women are rarely studied; leaving the prevalence of HIV and other health issues among this highly vulnerable population little understood.”
~Jay Silverman, Associate Professor of Society, Human Development, and Health at HSPH and lead author of the study.

“Let’s make a difference in the lives of women and girls who continue to suffer from physical, sexual and emotional violence.” Pionie Boso, Solomon Islands coordinator of the Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse Project.

Although this post focused on woman and young girls impacted by Modern-Day slavery, Here in the U.S., Black men are 5 times more likely than white men to be locked up for the same crime. With the 2007 infection rate of Black men currently standing at more than double that of any other demographic, I am left to wonder how many Black Men are contracting HIV/AIDS through unprotected sex while in prison.

Since the early 80’s HIV/AIDS has taken the lives of men, women, children, regardless of age, race and sexual orientation. In my teens, I worked as an HIV educator with Girls Incorporated’s, Project Prevent, in Lynn, MA. I remember watching the movie “And the Band Played On” with my team. For years, HIV/AIDS was ignored and the government hoped it would go away. We learned when they finally acknowledged it’s existence, it was seen treated as a “gay” disease. They even had another name for it, GRIDS – Gay related Immuno-deficiency syndrome.

When people of all races, genders, sexual orientation, and socio-economic background started getting sick with “GRIDS”, it was obvious that the instututionalized homophobia was unwarranted and hindered containing the disorder.

In a span of one generation, we have witnessed a couple of hundred diagnosed to “more than two million AIDS related deaths reported globally in 2008″ with “two million children under the age of 15 now living with HIV.”

What can be done to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS?
1) Get tested – Know your HIV status
2) Get your partner tested – Know their HIV status
3) If you have survived a rape attack - Know your HIV status. Report the rapist and press charges.
3) Talk to your children, nieces, nephews, sisters, brothers, cousins about safe sex and the safest of all sex – ABSTINENCE!
4) If you had or are having an affair outside of your relationship / marriage, protect yourself and your family. Know your HIV status.
5) Use a condom – They are safe and with these new ones like Durex Bare and Trojan Ecstasy, you can barely tell it’s there – No excuses.
6) Volunteer an hour of your time to an AIDS Patient, Give them a hug, Ask them to hug you, learn from them and listen to their experience.
7) LOVE AND RESPECT YOURSELF AND WHAT COMES FROM THE EARTH while keeping your future in your mind. We can appreciate our sexuality because between responsible, and caring adults it is one of the greatest gifts from God to share.

::NOTE – I am standing up for Alternative Medicine for Healthcare. Whether you have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, or not, protect your immune system. Take Organic Coconut Oil w/ Lauric Acid daily as it helps the body boost it’s immune system. Research and support Alternative and Natural Medicine. For some in medicine, disease smells like dirty money, for others disease is treated as a conditioned response to an out of wack vibration, nutricional deficiency, blocked chakra, etc. that costs little money to relieve and restore one to optimal wellness.
